We are home to 1700 students from 40 nationalities. We are inclusive and celebrate our diversity by welcoming students of all faiths.
We are blessed with a very supportive parent community who are actively involved in the children’s education. They play a significant role in the school through the Parent Support groups. We also have a Catholic Parents Group and Foreign Student Host Family Programme.
The EPSG is a voluntary group of parents with the common goal of wanting to contribute to the SJI International Elementary School community. Support is provided through a range of activities and services for SJI International Elementary School students, teachers and parents.
The EPSG is comprised of a representative from each class as well as the head of the three key initiatives: the Catholic Parents Group (CPG), the Uniform Shop and the Café. From this group an Executive Committee, comprising Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, is elected.
The EPSG organises social events, fundraises for both school projects and class-specific charities, provides a communication channel back to the school for parents’ questions and queries, supports all the performing arts projects in the form of assisting with costumes, make-up, props, set and graphic design and filming, and actively works on health and nutrition initiatives. Subcommittees are formed as needed by the EPSG to support events.
The Class Representatives group is a sub-committee of the EPSG, comprising one elected representative from each class. The class representative attends the EPSG meetings to share the views of the parents in the class on current initiatives and events. Class representatives also support the work of the class teacher in a variety of ways, including creating a rota to assist in learning activities which may require a higher adult-to-child ratio. They may also be involved in costume making, organising parties, helping out on trips, sharing expertise to enhance the children’s learning through class presentations and helping with fundraising activities. They act as coordinators to facilitate help as required and many class representatives share the role with other parents in the class.
The PSG is a volunteer group of parents who strive to enhance school life for students and their families and to promote the spirit of community within the SJI International family. Through enrolment of a student at SJI International, the parent automatically becomes a member of the PSG. Each grade has two Grade Representatives who are available to take feedback on non-academic matters. Serving on this body makes a difference to the lives of both the children and the whole school and resonates with the Lasallian spirit of service.
To foster closer communication between parents and the school, the PSG organises regular dialogues through Open Meetings and holds a Parents’ Social night. It collaborates with the school at events such as Sports Day and Performing Arts events by providing F&B support. The PSG also organises the annual Teachers’ Appreciation day and helps to support the Foreign Student Programme.
The Catholic Parents Group supports the spiritual life of the school, actively assisting the Faith Formation Team in their campus-wide Catholic activities. There are four interest groups available for students to join in the Catholic League CCA: Chapel Ministry, The Legion of Mary, Young Christian Students, and Altar Servers. The CPG meets weekly for Mass, Prayers, Praise & Worship, and Bible Study. There is a large and active parent volunteer group who help with Chapel duties, undertaking such things as, flower arrangements, chapel supplies, choir & music.
The School Chapel, also known as the “Sanctuary of Divine Love”, is open daily from 6.30am to 4.30pm. For all students, teachers, parents and school staff, the Chapel is for individual private prayer, community prayer & Mass, school events or activities related to the life of faith. Morning prayers are held on 3 days of the week, while a mass is celebrated each Friday morning and the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is available.
Parents get together weekly to pray for our children, for the school and for our families. We pray in the Chapel and at Mary’s Grotto. We pray every Friday after Mass; during Lent we pray the Stations of the Cross; when our children prepare for their IGCSE and IB exams parents do a 9-week Novena Prayer; we start and end the school year with Thanksgiving prayers.
The Host Family Programme under the Parent Support Group (PSG) was conceived towards the end of 2007 in the first year the school started and was operational by January 2008 as there are many students who have left their home countries to come to Singapore to study. The aim is to help foreign students feel welcome at SJI International and in Singapore. Students are paired with families based in Singapore who take them out or spend time with them twice a month and get to know them better. In this way rewarding new relationships are forged between the families and the foreign students who are assigned to them. Outings for students and host families are organised throughout the year.
