A big part of school life at SJI International High School is the numerous performance opportunities available to students. One of the best ways to improve on a musical instrument is to perform with, and for, others. Whether it is participating in one of the numerous school ensembles (Orchestra, Choir, Samba, Ukulele, Guitar, Jazz Band, Brass Group, Beginner’s Band, Gamelan) or performing at one of the numerous school concerts, there is certainly a lot to get involved in.
The High School Music Department is hoping to expand the instrumental tuition program this year, with a particular emphasis on Brass and Woodwind Tuition. We currently have many trumpets (and other instruments) sitting at school, longing to be played.
There is much evidence confirming the benefits of learning a musical instrument. Music stimulates the acquisition of transferable skills and attributes, such as listening skills, concentration, aural memory, presentation and teamwork. It also develops the virtues of creativity, risk-taking, intuition, sensitivity, perseverance and a sense of achievement and enjoyment as the following TED Talk is an excellent reminder of the benefits of learning a musical instrument on our human brain.
We are currently offering lessons for the following instruments:
Maya Nova - Voice
Eugene Seow - Drums and Bass
Terry Ang - Flute
Alvin Wong - Guitar and Ukelele
Stephen Rufus - Saxophone & Clarinet
Chua Siong Loo - Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, French Horn
