We know that sports help develop and grow the virtues of every child. Our ACSIS sports teams and CCAs are now linked to our Virtues programme. All coaches and providers are learning to speak ‘the language of the virtues’, and using this as the basis for the social skills learning that takes place in every training session and match.
Integral to Life at SJIIES
Sport is an integral part of life here at our Elementary campus. We offer a tremendous variety of individual and team sports across all age groups and skill levels. Our campus and facilities make this possible, and each day they are buzzing with teams, coaches and smiling children all fully engaged in the sport that they love.
A Leading School in ACSIS
SJI Elementary is a leading school in ACSIS (Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools). For a medium-sized school, our rate of participation and performance is simply outstanding. Almost 50% of our students (Grade 2-6) will play on at least one school team each year, and we are extremely proud of this. We have accomplished this by providing a vibrant and exciting programme giving every child an opportunity to play, either by joining a CCA club or being in their school team. By getting kids ‘hooked into sport’ at a young age we engage them fully, and in doing so help develop our students’ virtues of self-confidence and resilience.
A Pathway For Every Child
Our pathway to excellence begins in the Early Years (Prep 1 – Grade 1). By offering ‘learn to play’ fun-focused sports CCAs (Mini-tennis, Football, Gymnastics, Multi-sport) we give our youngest students their first taste of ‘after-school’ fun through sport.
In the Middle Years (Grade 2 – 4) our ACSIS Sports Programme is in full flight. We have massive participation in the Swim Team, Football, Badminton, Tennis, Netball, Cricket, Cross-County Running, Track and Field and Basketball. While our more elite athletes are off to fixtures, tournaments and swim meets all over Singapore, our more recreationally-minded students have the option of after-school sports CCAs. We find that offering a balance of recreational and competitive programmes increases our total participation.
School Teams and Our Virtues Programme
In the UES (Upper Elementary Grade 5 – 6) the training programmes for ACSIS teams become more demanding as the physical development of the children increases and the desire by some students to specialise and focus on one sport. By dividing the year into three seasons of the sport, however, we encourage our children to play on different school teams throughout the year and thus develop ‘well rounded’ athletes who are successful in more than one sport.
Whether your child is a ‘specialist’ (swim team only) or one who participates on 6 different teams across a variety of sports we endeavour to offer excellence to every child.
