Art

Overview

Art at SJI International stimulates creative imaginations, challenges perceptions and develops innovative and analytical skills. It is a subject that enriches personal identity and builds awareness of aesthetics in a real-world context. The art department at SJI International aims to cultivate diverse and dynamic environments that allow students to confidently inquire into concepts, topics, and ideas that they find of value according to their unique interests. It is student-centred, inspires curiosity, and promotes autonomous life-long learning with creativity as a vehicle of self-discovery.

Muskan Roe, Grade 11, 2021

“I dream my painting and then I paint my dream”, a famous quote by Vincent Van Goh is how I have wished to live my life. From a very tender age, my dream was to pursue the arts as a career. Being an Indian Classical Dancer and singer, painter and performer; I have always been surrounded by the arts community. Now, they are so integrated into my life that they make an essential part of me. I am but a blank book without my arts. I became a step closer to this dream of mine when I decided to pursue Visual Arts as a subject in IGCSE and now IB.

Growing up, SJI International has played a crucial role in weaving the arts into my daily life. The school year is overflowing with opportunities for art students such as myself to participate in. With a never-ending supply of CCAs along with MADDD (music, arts, dance, drama, design) week and theatre and music performances I have never felt the absence of the arts.

The arts are a way of tying our students together and the school plays the role of keeping this culture alive. Yes, the past two years have been difficult with Covid-19 as a huge hurdle for us all, decreasing the frequency of these events. However, as part of the arts council for the past 3 years, I can proudly say that the Lasallian spirit cannot easily be broken. I hope that through the strength and support of the SJI International community we can rise up and turn these difficult times to light. Through art, the school has truly taught us to love the small beautiful aspects of life by learning how to paint our dreams on life’s canvas and looking forward to a brighter tomorrow."
