Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

pastoral care and wellbeing - SJI International

Inspired by our Patron Saint, St. John Baptiste de La Salle, who emphasised teachers' role in touching hearts, we ensure students feel valued, cared for, and loved. We focus on each child's holistic development, placing their wellbeing at the core of everything we do and creating a safe and nurturing environment where they can develop a strong sense of belonging and thrive socially and academically.

Our Elementary School teachers build strong relationships with each child and value strong collaboration with our families. The development of social and emotional skills takes place through The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) units and explicit teaching of a Wellbeing Curriculum. Using the Virtues ProjectTM, we cultivate children of character through the intentional teaching, modelling, and integration of virtues into everyday school life.

Homeroom teachers and teaching assistants provide the majority of pastoral support for the children in their class, with care from their Heads of Grade. The Student Success team, comprising Counsellors, Learning Support and the English as an Additional Language team, are on hand to ensure that every child, and their family, feels supported academically, socially and emotionally.

In High School, our Heads of Grades, Learning Coordinators and Tutors oversee pastoral care under the leadership of the Vice-Principals. There is a Head of Grade for each Grade Level who works with Tutor teams to facilitate supportive and extensive pastoral care.

Students are assigned to a Tutor Group, where their Tutor meets them daily to take attendance and discuss progress with parents, subject teachers, and the students themselves. Tutors spend one-on-one time with students, addressing academic work, activities, service projects, friendships, school life, and overall wellbeing.

At SJI International, we are proud to offer a dedicated Wellbeing Curriculum that supports the social, emotional, and mental health of our students. Through age-appropriate lessons, we equip students with the skills to build healthy relationships, manage challenges, and develop a strong sense of self. Our curriculum reflects our commitment to nurturing compassionate, confident, and resilient young people.

We support the wellbeing of every student through a range of health and emotional services. Our dedicated school nurses offer essential health care, including emergency medical assistance, basic treatments, and medical assessments to ensure students' physical wellbeing.

In addition, our compassionate school counsellors are available to help students navigate and address social and emotional challenges, providing a safe space for personal growth and development. Together, these services play a vital role in fostering a healthy, supportive environment for all students.
