Br Lawrence Humphrey, FSC

Brother President

Br Lawrence Humphrey, FSC is a De La Salle Brother from the United States who is presently serving as Brother President of SJI International.

Br Lawrence is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He entered the De La Salle Brothers after graduation from secondary school, and completed his studies at Christian Brothers University (BA) in Memphis, Tennessee, the University of San Francisco (MA), and The Catholic University of America (Adv. Graduate Certificate)

Before coming to SJI International he was Vice President for Mission at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Most of his years as a De La Salle Brother have been spent in school administration, although he has also been a teacher of History, Geography, and Religious Studies.

Michael Johnston

Chief Executive Officer

Michael Johnston has extensive international school leadership experience, having worked in Asia, Europe and Central America for over 25 years. He has held leadership roles from grade level leader to Head of School and everything in between in some of the most notable schools around the world. Michael is an IB workshop leader, board trainer, and visiting accreditation chair with a passion for deep-connected learning experiences that allow students to take on some of the world's most complex issues. 

Originally from Canada, he has worked in Mexico, Russia, Qatar, Singapore, Guatemala, and Germany and is very excited to be back in Singapore for the second time in his career. His wife, Rose, is a social/emotional counsellor, and they are joined by their two kids, Finley and Grace, and their dog, Copper. With his PhD in Organisational Systems Michael works with schools around the world to implement learning and wellbeing structures that serve the needs of today’s youth.

Michael was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE), where he contributes to the global advancement of international education leadership and innovation.

Biography about Michael Johnston
Clement Lee

Chief Operating Officer

Clement Lee oversees the centralised administrative functions of SJI International. Retired from the SAF after 26 years with the rank of Colonel, Clement held a variety of key commands along with operational and managerial staff appointments.

A graduate of Hwa Chong, Chinese High School, West Point, and Nanyang Technological University, his Masters of Science is in the area of strategic studies. His experience in leadership development, strategic planning, and organisational administration support the vision, mission, values, and ethos of our learning community at SJI International.

Andrew Chew

Director Communications, Marketing and Advancement

Andrew is an experienced leader across all sectors of education including K-12, Universities, and Adult Training. Currently, he is the Director of Communications, Marketing and Advancement at St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International, a leading K-12 international school in Singapore. In this role, he is a member of Executive Leadership and leads communications, marketing, and advancement. This includes driving philanthropic initiatives for the school’s development. Prior to this, he was Chief Commercial Officer at James Cook University (Singapore Campus) and concurrently Chairman of the board of directors of James Cook Institute. Among his achievements, Andrew led James Cook University’s entry into adult training via the acquisition of Eagle Infotech, and its subsequent rebrand and transformation to James Cook Institute.

Initially Andrew started his career in Melbourne in management consulting and auditing with BDO Chartered Accountants and Consultants. Since then, Andrew has worked in a variety of roles in property development, hotel revenue management, and education and training. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce with double major in Accounting and Management from Monash University, and Master of International Tourism and Hospitality Management from James Cook University with Academic Medal. Andrew is a member of Singapore Institute of Directors (SID).

Maria Ciola

Director Admissions, Scholarships and Philanthropy

Maria is a seasoned banker with more than 20 years senior management experience across multiple divisions, 10 of which was with DBS Bank, Singapore. Prior to DBS Bank, Maria was at Westpac Banking Corporation, Australia, where she successfully established new business divisions following various mergers and acquisitions and was one of the founding members of the Bank's 'Women in Business'.

Following a career sabbatical of 2 years, Maria made the successful transition to the education industry, and joined the Elementary School as a Strategic Planning and Communications Consultant where she worked with the Leadership Team to develop the school's 5-year strategic plan, streamlined processes and enhanced its communication strategy.

Throughout her career, Maria has been a firm believer of 'giving back' and has held various volunteer posts, from Guest Auditor for various industry bodies (ISO, Spring Singapore) to being a member of industry boards (CCAS, ABA). Currently, Maria is a Girl Guide Leader and runs the 8th Singapore Brownies at the Elementary School. Maria is Spanish and moved from Australia to Singapore in 2001.

Alvin Yeo

Director of ICT

Alvin has more than 22 years of IT experience of which the last 13 years were spent leading IT operations for schools in the private education sector. Alvin joins us from Cognita Schools where he was IT Director for Asia and also a member of the group's Global IT executive committee.

Prior to joining Cognita, Alvin was with the Canadian International School in Singapore and Knowledge Universe (which owned Pat's Schoolhouse and Learning Vision) as Head of IT and IT Director respectively.

Alvin is a graduate of the Queensland University of Technology, is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) and also a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Bradley Bird

High School Principal

Bradley Bird joined SJI International in 2023 as High School Principal. He has over 30 years of experience in secondary education across Australia and abroad. Previously, Bradley was Head of Secondary at the Australian International School, Singapore, where he led the implementation of high-impact teaching and learning practices across the IB and Higher School Certificate curricula. He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Melbourne, along with undergraduate qualifications in Commerce and Education.

Originally from Melbourne, Bradley spent two decades in the Victorian Certificate of Education system, holding a range of senior leadership roles. His passion lies in fostering holistic student learning and empowering young people with the voice, confidence, and skills to thrive in a diverse, ever-changing world. He is also deeply committed to the power of relationships in education and is guided by the mission and values of his Lasallian school community.

Alongside his leadership role, Bradley collaborates with the University of Queensland and the University of Warwick to support postgraduate teaching programmes. He also works with the Council of International Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and advises two education companies based in Canada and Australia.

Catherine Nicol

Elementary School Principal

Catherine has extensive international school leadership experience, having worked in Asia since 1990, in notable schools such as Yokohama International School in Japan, Prem Tinsulanonda International School in Thailand and International School of Tianjin, China. She is also an accredited IB Educator, Workshop Leader, School Visitor and Consultant and has Council of International Schools (CIS) accreditation experience.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Catherine spent her formative years in Germany. She holds a First Class Bachelor Degree with Honours from University College of North Wales and a Masters Degree with Distinction from Loughborough University in England. She spent three years teaching in the UK before embarking on an international teaching career.

Dr Gary Guo

Director of
Bilingual Programme

Dr Gary Guo earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Hong Kong, where his research focused on bilingual programme evaluation, bilingual curriculum development, Chinese studies, and effective approaches to teaching and learning. Over the course of his career, he has developed deep expertise in designing and implementing bilingual education models tailored to diverse international contexts. Having worked in several countries across Asia and beyond, Dr Guo brings a global perspective to education, with proven success in adapting bilingual programmes to meet the unique needs of multicultural student populations. His leadership is marked by strategic vision, collaborative team building, and a commitment to ensuring academic excellence while nurturing cultural understanding and holistic student growth.

In addition to his school leadership roles, Dr Guo actively contributes to shaping international education through his work with the International Baccalaureate (IB). As an examiner, standardisation team member, and workshop leader, he plays an important role in setting and maintaining global benchmarks for bilingual and international education. With his extensive international experience, strong leadership background, and research-driven approach, Dr Guo is recognised as a thought leader in the field. He is deeply committed to bridging research and practice, advancing bilingual education worldwide, and developing programmes that empower students to thrive linguistically, academically, and culturally in a rapidly globalising world.
