Singapore's third privately-funded school is not only getting many of its students from abroad, but also much of its sponsorship.

St Joseph's Institution (International) has found 12 companies and individuals from the region to provide scholarships for students from their home countries. The list includes the giant conglomerate, The Lippo Group, and publicly-listed media company Bimantara û both from Indonesia û as well as the Bangkok Mass Transit System.

With another four to go before it opens, SJI (International) has raised more than $3 million in scholarship funding, the most secured by a Singapore school.

It has now committed to scholarships for 50 SJI students to do the International Baccalaureate and about 30 international students.

The school announced its latest sponsors at an MOU signing ceremony yesterday with the Economic Development Board.

Mr Thitipat Jayapattana of the Pirayanukroh Foundation told TODAY that the foundation would sponsor Thai children in its border areas.

He had heard of the SJI brand name even before the school's old boys approached him.

"I've observed some activities by SJI students. It has so many students of high quality. This will be a very useful scholarship," he said. Derrick A Paulo

"It definitely motivates us to further enhance and develop our spa offerings," said Mr Mark Griffiths, general manager of The Sentosa Resort & Spa which won the Best Spa Experience award for the third consecutive year this year.
